Our take
Houston's big light shows fall into three types, and the type decides most of your evening. In a drive-thru such as The Light Park in Katy and Spring, you stay in the car and pay per vehicle. A walk-through trail such as Zoo Lights, Radiant Nature or Galaxy Lights takes 60 to 90 minutes on foot and is priced per person. A farm or park event, Dewberry Farm or Moody Gardens, is closer to a half-day outing.
The Light Park opens first, on November 6. Most of the others start between November 14 and 21 and close in the first days of January. Radiant Nature runs the longest, until February 21, which makes it the best choice once the holidays are over. Weeknights are calmer everywhere, and at the walk-through shows several ticket prices change by date.
Expect roughly $15 to $30 a person for the walk-through shows: early-bird tickets at Sugar Land Holiday Lights start at $15, Galaxy Lights is $19.95 to $27.95, and Radiant Nature is $26.50 for adults. Galaxy Lights includes entry to Space Center Houston's exhibits, which makes it the best value if your kids like rockets. For bigger families, a drive-thru priced per car usually works out cheaper.
