Houston doesn't get snow, but it does go big on lights. From the trails at the Houston Zoo to drive-thru shows off I-45 and a hayride through a farm's trail of lights, there are eight major light shows within an hour of downtown. Each one is different: some you walk, some you drive, and they open at different times.

We compared all eight using each organizer's own 2026 announcements, checked on November 6, 2026. Where a show hasn't announced its dates yet, we say so instead of guessing.

Which one should you pick?

You'd rather stay in the car: The Light Park

Both Katy and Spring are drive-thru shows synced to music on your car radio. They are the first to open (November 6), run every night rain or shine, and are priced per car rather than per person, which helps bigger families. Gates open at 5:30 pm. On December weekends, arriving close to opening saves the longest wait.

The classic night out in the city: Zoo Lights

Zoo Lights is the big walking trail inside the Houston Zoo, with themed zones and snow every night. This year it opens on Christmas Day for the first time (it is closed December 9 and Christmas Eve), and November 30 is a sensory-inclusive night with softer music and fewer flashing lights. The zoo has no parking lot of its own. The free Hermann Park lots fill quickly, so come early or take the METRORail.

Lights on a farm: Dewberry Farm

Dewberry Farm in Brookshire does it with a hay-wagon ride through a trail of lights, a separate walk-through display and Santa. The farm also sells Christmas trees, so you can get your tree and see lights in one trip. Some rides cost extra on top of the ticket.

Watching the budget: Sugar Land Holiday Lights

Early-bird tickets for Sugar Land Holiday Lights at Constellation Field start at $15, the lowest posted price of the shows that have announced 2026 pricing. It is an easy evening out for families in Fort Bend County.

Making a day of it: Moody Gardens in Galveston

Holiday in the Gardens is about an hour from downtown, so plan it as a day trip. If you go the first weekend of December, Dickens on The Strand (December 4–6) is on the same island.

When each show opens

  • November 6: The Light Park, Katy and Spring
  • November 14: Galaxy Lights, on select nights (members' preview November 13)
  • November 19: Zoo Lights (members' preview nights November 17–18)
  • November 20: Sugar Land Holiday Lights and Radiant Nature
  • November 21: Moody Gardens and Dewberry Farm

Most shows close in the first days of January. Radiant Nature is the exception: it runs until February 21, so it is the one to keep in mind if the holidays get too busy.

Bringing the dog

Radiant Nature is the only one of the eight that sells dog tickets ($10, select nights only). Check the pet rules of any other show before you bring one. At the drive-thru Light Park the dog can simply ride along in the car.

Tips before you go

  • Book dated tickets early for December weekends. Zoo Lights and Dewberry tickets are valid only for the date you choose, and the weekends just before Christmas tend to sell out first.
  • Weeknights are calmer. Lines and crowds are shortest Sunday to Thursday, especially before mid-December.
  • Kids 2 and under get in free at Zoo Lights and Dewberry Farm.
  • Weather: Zoo Lights and The Light Park run rain or shine. For the others, check the official site on stormy days.
